28 August 2014 - Leicester City sign Esteban Cambiasso

Leicester City completed the signing of former Inter Milan captain Esteban Cambiasso on a one-year deal.

The Foxes, Championship winners the previous season, beat interest from a host of other clubs to bring Argentina’s most decorated footballer to the Barclays Premier League.

Cambiasso, who was a key part of Jose Mourinho’s Inter side who won the UEFA Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia in 2010, claimed five Serie A titles in total and also won La Liga during four years with Real Madrid.

The midfielder, who had just turned 34, said: “In the past I had great possibilities because I played in Italy, Spain and Argentina but for my career and my future I need to play in the Barclays Premier League.

“Inter was a great experience but that is in the past and I need to look forward now. I know the coach and all the club had an idea for me.”

Leicester assistant manager Steve Walsh said: “We just made it clear we wanted him and when we finally got him face-to-face it was never in doubt.”

Defensive midfielder Cambiasso played a starring role for the Foxes as they avoided relegation from the Barclays Premier League at the first attempt, despite being seven points adrift of safety at the end of March.

He was involved in all but seven of their BPL matches and scored five goals, including one in a pulsating 5-3 victory over Manchester United in September. He also netted as Leicester beat West Ham United 2-1 at the start of April, the first of seven victories from their final nine matches as they pulled off an unlikely escape from the drop zone.
