Berahino Request Rejected

West Bromwich Albion have rejected a written transfer request from Saido Berahino.

The 22-year-old forward was left out of the match-day squad to face Chelsea on Sunday by manager Tony Pulis amid interest from Premier League rivals Tottenham.

Spurs remain keen to bring Berahino to White Hart Lane before the close of the summer transfer window despite having had a bid of £18m rejected last week.

Pulis, prior to his side's 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at The Hawthorns, had told Berahino to forget ongoing discussions over a potential transfer to Spurs and focus on matters on the pitch.

Berahino, however, has now informed West Brom of his desire to leave the club before the September 1 deadline, handing in a written transfer request less than 24 hours after his omission from the first-team squad.

"West Bromwich Albion have received a written transfer request from Saido Berahino," a club statement read.

"The request has been rejected and the club's position remains unchanged from that outlined in the statement from chairman Jeremy Peace of August 18.

"There will be no further comment."
